THEMATIC AND REGIONAL GROUPS

Regional Groups

 

*GEM-Asia: This group looks at issues that specifically affect women in Asia. Its members have conducted researchon Globalization, Labor Markets and Gender Inequity: A Cross National Study in Asia and received funding from UNDP for this research.

*GEM-Transition Economies: This group seeks to promote gender issues in transition economies, and has organized a training workshop in Uzbekistan for government officials.Its members have translated some GEM-IWG teaching materials into Russian.

*GEM-Africa: This group seeks to improve conditions for women in Africa, and works in collaboration with UNECA.It is composed of group members who have organized and taught a short training course in collaboration with UNIFEM in 2004. GEM-Africa is also conducting research on gender issues in Africa.

*GEM Africa French-Speaking Countries: This is a sub-group of GEM-Africa and members are involved in organizing a course in French, which will also include a translation of basic materials in French.

*GEM-LAC (Latin America):This group aims to promote gender issues in Latin America, and held a Latin American version of the GEM- IWG course in Spanish in Fall of 2006.GEM-LAC has received funding from the Ford Foundation, IDRC, the Kellogg Foundation and UNIFEM.

*GEM-MENA (Middle East and North Africa): This group is working on introducing GEM- IWG's work in Arab countries.

Thematic Groups

 

*Curriculum: This is a group that shares information; an outcome of this group’s work is the newly launched Gender Equality and the Economy Program at the Levy Institute of Economics, which will have in its newly instituted Ph.D. program a field of specialization in Gender and Macroeconomics.

*Employer of Last Resort and Employment Guarantee Policies: This is a virtual study group. Some members are involved in exploring gender dimensions and country experiences with Public Employment Guarantee schemes. Recently members of this group organized and participated in a Conference on Employment Guarantee policies: Theory and Practice.

*Time-Use, Social Accounting Matrix and CGE Modeling: The Time Use and Social Accounting Matrix ( SAM) Analysis members of this group organized a three day conference on Unpaid Work and the Economy , a partnership with UNDP, GEM- IWG and the Levy Institute of Economics in Fall 2005. Some members of the group have been compiling materials in preparation for a virtual course platform.

*Gender Budgets, Fiscal Policy, Taxation: This group is working on a project regarding taxation in Kenya, South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, India, and the United Kingdom. Within each country, a team composed of a tax economist, a lawyer, and a gender-aware economist will compile a quantitative and qualitative picture of the gender dimensions of taxation. They will engage tax policy makers in discussions of why and how gender matters, and use the research findings to make recommendations for how to make taxation systems more supportive of gender equality.

*Gender and Decent Work In The Global Economy: This working group intends to work on the gender dimensions of the Decent Work agenda emphasizing the role of macroeconomic policies.
