Activities: University of Utah/Service
I have been active in facilitating the University's involvement with issues of immigration and have spearheaded a number of related activities in outreach, teaching and research under the rubric of "Integrating the Immigrant." This efforts are on-going and varied and will continue to evolve. We have submitted several research proposals for funding and collaborate through the College's Institute for Public and International Affairs (IPIA). My students have published both "Immigration in Context: A Resource Guide for Utah" and "The Case for Caution" in collaboration with the University's Honors Program and the United Way.
I co-directed the Latin American Studies Steering
Committee from 1999 to 2003, which temporarily revitalized Latin
American Studies here at the University of Utah. We
submitted and received a number of grants and undertook other activities, e.g. offering a Minor in Latin
American Studies. I received a grant for a Group Project
Abroad in Ecuador for K-12 teachers. It was funded by the
Fulbright-Hays Program of the U.S. Department of Education. I have taken five groups for Study Abroad Programs.
I will continue to participate in the local community on
the boards of which I am a member and in the various areas
where I serve as a volunteer. I was a member of the YES Working Group
of the University/Neighborhood Partners and taught in the Spanish version of their Westside Leadership Institute. I was Chair of the
Board of Holy Cross Ministries, which works with Hispanics
in Salt Lake, Wendover, and Park City.
