Week 1 outline


1/3/02 (first class)

-Discuss syllabus and course requirements

-Discuss what the course is and what it is not

-Ask a series of questions regarding students knowledge and interest of sports economics, and create list of topics within the economics of professional sports and tried to group them together into broader topics.

-Have each student write about their education thus far including year in school, what other economics courses have you taken, reason for taking the course, and email address. If you were not able to attend class, please email me this information as soon as possible.




1/8/02 (second class)

-Spend a significant amount of time discussing research paper requirements and expectations. Also, create a list of possible topics and discuss ways to find a particular topic of interest and how to get started on the project.



-Pay special attention on the course syllabus to due dates!

-Discussion of Chapter One in text

-Description of various topics within sports economics including industrial organization, public finance, and labor economics.

-Description of positive vs. normative economics and their relevance to sports economics.



-Description of models and how useful they are in examining problems in economics, as well as some of the limitations of economic models.



-Looked at course website to show additional resources on the web.
